Thulusdhoo is a small but vibrant island in the Kaafu Atoll, located about 28 km (17 miles) northeast of Malé. It’s one of the most popular local islands for travelers who want an authentic Maldivian experience without the high prices of private resorts.
1. Surfing hotspot
Thulusdhoo is famous for its world-class surf break called Cokes, named after the nearby Coca-Cola bottling plant—the only one in the Maldives. Surfers from around the world visit for consistent, powerful waves.
2. Local island culture
Unlike resort islands, Thulusdhoo is inhabited by locals. You’ll see traditional Maldivian life, including fishing, local crafts, and community living.
3. Affordable travel
Guesthouses and small hotels make it much cheaper than luxury resorts, while still offering beautiful beaches and excursions.
4. Bikini Beach
There’s a designated tourist beach where visitors can wear swimwear freely, since local culture is conservative.
Snorkeling & diving: Coral reefs, reef sharks, turtles, and colorful fish
Island hopping: Visit nearby islands and sandbanks
Surfing: Especially May–October (surf season)
Sunset watching: Stunning Indian Ocean views
Water sports: Jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding
Speedboat: ~25–35 minutes from Malé
Public ferry: ~1.5–2 hours (cheaper but slower, limited schedule)
Thulusdhoo has many guesthouses and boutique stays, often including meals and excursions. It’s ideal for budget and mid-range travelers.
Alcohol is not available on local islands (only on resort islands or liveaboards)
